Dubai Ruler attends 'ITU Plenipotentiary Conference' opening session

DUBAI, (Pakistan Point News - 29th Oct, 2018) His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, attended the opening session of the International Telecommunication Union, ITU, Plenipotentiary Conference, which began today at the Dubai World Trade Centre and will run until 16th November 2018.

Along with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, the session was also attended by H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai; H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation; H.H. Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum; Khalifa Saeed Sulaiman, Director-General of the Dubai Protocol and Hospitality Department; Helal Saeed Al Marri, CEO of the Dubai World Trade Centre Authority, as well as several relevant senior civilian and military officials and around 1,000 representatives from other countries.

The session began with the national anthem, which was followed by a speech by the conference’s chairman, Major General Talal Humaid Belhoul Al Falasi, Chairman of the board of Directors of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, TRA, who welcomed the sponsorship and attendance of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed. Major General Al Falasi also welcomed the other attendees, including Charlot Salwai, Prime Minister of Vanuatu, Afghanistan's Chief Executive Abdullah Abdulla, Houlin Zhao, Secretary-General of the ITU, and the ITU’s elected members.

In his speech, Major General Al Falasi pointed out that the UAE’s hosting of the 20th edition of the conference in Dubai is an international acknowledgement by the telecommunications sector of the UAE’s accomplishments in the sector and its ideal use of the latest technologies, to serve its people and make them happy, as well as to build its national digital economy on scientific and technological foundations.

In his speech, Zhao praised the management and organisation of the conference while thanking the UAE’s leadership, government and relevant institutions for hosting the international event and making it a success.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed and the attendees listened to a recorded speech by Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-General, who wished the conference success in advancing and developing the telecommunications sector, both internationally and regionally. Guterres also thanked the UAE for hosting the conference, which will serve humanity, make people happy, and help achieve regional and international sustainable development.

H.H. Sheikh Mohammed and the attendees then listened to a recorded speech by Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre and Director-General of the TRA, who announced the launch of the satellite, "KhalifaSat," in Japan while showing a live video of the launch.

The session concluded with a video presented by an "Emirati flower," which highlighted the development of the country’s telecommunications sector since the era of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

H.H. Sheikh Mohammed expressed his happiness at the UAE’s hosting of the conference in Dubai while stressing that the country always welcomes its guests, including scientists, experts, investors, tourists and cultured people, to establish social and civil communication, respect, cooperation, knowledge and cultural exchange between the Emirati people and the peoples of the world.

H.H. Sheikh Mohammed wished the conference luck and success in making beneficial decisions and recommendations, which will serve people and human civilisation.
