Russian Security Council Secretary Meets With DRC Intelligence Chief in Moscow - Statement

Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev held talks with Kalev Mutondo, the director of the National Intelligence Service (ANR) of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), in Moscow, the council's press service said on Friday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th October, 2018) Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev held talks with Kalev Mutondo, the director of the National Intelligence Service (ANR) of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), in Moscow, the council's press service said on Friday.

"Nikolai Patrushev and Kalev Mutondo discussed political aspects of the Russian-Congolese relations, the questions related to the improvement of the legal framework of cooperation between Russia and the DRC, military and defense industry cooperation as well as the interaction between the intelligence agencies [of the two states]," the press service said.

The sides also discussed the fight against terrorism and security situation in Africa, the press service added.

The African country has suffered instability since the mid-1990s. The so-called Second Congo War, or the Great War of Africa, ended in 2003, but clashes continued in the eastern areas of the DRC, where various rebel groups continue to operate. The internal conflict has significantly intensified since late 2016. On October 16, the UN Refugee Agency warned of a deteriorating humanitarian situation in the DRC, sparked by tensions between militia and the government in the Kasai Province.
