SADC Wants to Work With Partners, Including Russia, to Create Shared Satellite System

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is willing to work with its partners, including Russia, to develop a shared satellite system for the region, SADC Executive Secretary Dr. Stergomena Lawrence Tax told Sputnik.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th October, 2018) The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is willing to work with its partners, including Russia, to develop a shared satellite system for the region, SADC Executive Secretary Dr. Stergomena Lawrence Tax told Sputnik.

Earlier in October, media reported that SADC had approved the establishment of a committee of experts, whose aim would be to develop a framework for the creation of a shared satellite network.

"SADC has a number of partners, so any partner, who will be willing ... to work with us we invite. I would not say a priori which member states would be part of that. Any partner, [and] Russia is our partner ... we will be ready to work with any other partners as long as we have agreed on the terms," Tax indicated.

She added that the shared system's creation would strengthen the satellite system that is currently in place, stressing that it was the group's priority to do it in a short time.

The community of African states was established in 1980 as the Southern African Development Coordination Conference, and transformed into SADC in 1992. It currently comprises 16 states and aims to promote socio-economic, political and security cooperation in the region.
