The Cannon House Office Building at the US Capitol was evacuated after an audible alarm went off due to a malfunctioning electrical panel, the US Capitol Police said in a statement on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th October, 2018) The Cannon House Office Building at the US Capitol was evacuated after an audible alarm went off due to a malfunctioning electrical panel, the US Capitol Police said in a statement on Thursday.

"The United States Capitol Police and the Architect of the Capitol investigated the issue and discovered a malfunctioning electrical panel," police said. "There [were] no reports of smoke or fire."

US Capitol Police explained that the alarm was activated at approximately 11:45 a.m., and the building was cleared for re-entry at 1:00 p.m.

The police blocked Independence Avenue shortly after the evacuation in order to investigate the area.

Although the US House of Representatives is not in session, the emergency situation took place after a series of package bombs were sent to prominent Democrats, including former President Barack Obama, former Vice President Joe Biden, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the CNN office in New York a day earlier.

Several members of Congress have offices in the building, including Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
