Japan Seeking Larger Cooperation With Russia in Communication Technologies - Official

Japan wants to deepen ties with Russia in the area of communication technologies and calls for creating more opportunities for face-to-face meetings between the industry representatives, Tomohiro Ushiyama, the head of the International Economic Affairs Division of the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, told Sputnik.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th October, 2018) Japan wants to deepen ties with Russia in the area of communication technologies and calls for creating more opportunities for face-to-face meetings between the industry representatives, Tomohiro Ushiyama, the head of the International Economic Affairs Division of the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, told Sputnik.

"We want to search for different forms of cooperation. As concrete examples of such collaboration emerge, we want to deepen our cooperation in various forms even more. I will also make efforts to achieve this," Ushiyama said on the sidelines of the Russian-Japanese media forum.

The official named use of Japanese satellites for providing internet connection to Russia's Far Eastern regions as one of promising joint projects, noting, however, that the government could only assist such collaboration, whereas the issue mostly depended on the market actors.

"Russia has many companies that have strong confidence in their technologies. So, I think, that Russia wants to promote technologies developed by its companies to the outside world in various ways. Seeing how it has been shaping up, I think that it looks quite promising. But in some sense it is businesses' private area, the government can only assist cooperation. That is why it is so important to create such opportunities for representatives of different businesses to meet each other, using events like this forum," Ushiyama said.

The official also highlighted that there were certain "movements" toward the use of blockchain technology in Russia-Japan bilateral cooperation.

"The blockchain technology itself is a technology that provides various opportunities in daily life, but it is hard to tell what kind of results it will yield. I think there are many possibilities. Technologies like blockchain are becoming increasingly applied in various areas, not only in transactions, and methods that were traditionally used are now being replaced. I believe there is a possibility that a totally new form of collaboration, which nobody has imagined before, will appear in the future," Ushiyama said.

On Thursday, the International Information Agency Rossiya Segodnya hosted the Russian-Japanese media forum, which brought together senior communications officials of both countries and representatives of major media outlets.

Blockchain technology is a system of organization of distributed databases. It allows for various transactions to be registered and labeled with a time stamp, with the relevant information kept in a distributed database available to all network users.
