Demolition of Red Army Monuments in Poland to Affect Relations With Russia - Moscow

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said that the demolition of the Red Army monuments by the Polish authorities contradicts international legal obligations and will affect bilateral relations.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th October, 2018) Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said that the demolition of the Red Army monuments by the Polish authorities contradicts international legal obligations and will affect bilateral relations.

Earlier this week, Poland dismantled the famous monument to Soviet soldiers in Skaryszewski Park in Warsaw.

"This is another attempt by the Polish administration to radically revise the historical events of the World War II. [An attempt to] edit out the pages related to the decisive role of the Red Army in the liberation of Poland ... This is a destructive anti-Russian policy in the memorial sphere, it is immoral, and it is a gross violation of international legal obligations. Its destructive effect on bilateral relations is inevitable," she told a briefing.

Zakharova added that losses of the Soviet army in that area of the front amounted to more than 200,000 people.

In 2017, amendments to the so-called decommunization law stipulating the demolition of the Soviet-era monuments and renaming the objects associated with the Communist legacy were introduced in Poland. Russia has criticized the legislation and condemned the Polish actions.

According to Poland's Institute of National Remembrance, there are around 450 Soviet-era monuments across the country, including 230 Red Army monuments, which are subject to demolition under the law.
