Russia Proposing UN Draft Resolution Supporting INF Treaty Preservation - Diplomat

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th October, 2018) Russia is proposing a draft resolution supporting the preservation of the US-Russian Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty at the UN General Assembly after Washington revealed plans to withdraw from the bilateral deal, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said.

The plans to quit the deal were announced by US President Donald Trump who claimed Moscow had violated the bilateral agreement, something vehemently denied by Russia.

"Today, Russia is submitting a draft resolution supporting the preservation of the [INF] treaty at the United Nations General Assembly First Committee. We will see how states, including US allies, act in this situation," Rybakov said on Russia's Channel One late on Wednesday.

The United Nations General Assembly First Committee is also referred to as the Disarmament and International Security Committee.

The US decision to quit the INF treaty has been met with criticism by officials and activists not only in Russia, but also in the United States, Europe and Asia, provoking fears of an arms race escalation.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed hope that Moscow and Washington will resolve their disagreements amid the US plans to withdraw from the INF deal.
