Italy Fines Apple, Samsung for Deliberate Slowing Down Old Devices Performance - Statement

The Italian Competition Authority (AGCM) said Wednesday it had fined Apple and Samsung companies over their deliberate slowing down the performance of oil devices.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 24th October, 2018) The Italian Competition Authority (AGCM) said Wednesday it had fined Apple and samsung companies over their deliberate slowing down the performance of oil devices.

The Italian authorities opened an investigation into the activities of Apple and Samsung in January 2018. Rome suspected the two companies of reducing the productivity of their old devices in order to stimulate sales of new models.

"During a comprehensive investigation the AGCM found out that the Apple and Samsung companies were involved in unfair commercial activities having issued a number of software updates for mobile phones, which resulted in serious problems in the work of devices and accelerated their replacement [with new devices]," the AGCM statement said.

Apple must pay a 10-million euro fine (over $11 million), while Samsung a 5-million euro fine.

On December 29, Apple issued an apology over its handling of the battery issue, offering a number of measures to "regain the trust of anyone who may have doubted Apple's intentions," including reducing the price of an iPhone battery replacement.
