Poland Understands US Desire to Pull Out of INF Treaty With Russia - Foreign Minister

Warsaw expresses understanding of US plans to withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) with Russia as it agrees with US claims that Moscow violated the agreement, Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz said on Monday.

WARSAW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd October, 2018) Warsaw expresses understanding of US plans to withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) with Russia as it agrees with US claims that Moscow violated the agreement, Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz said on Monday.

US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that Washington would leave the INF Treaty accusing Russia of violating its terms. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov rejected the accusations, stressing that the scrapping of the INF agreement would force Russia to take measures ensuring its security.

"We express understanding of US actions, because we agree with the view that Russia is violating the terms of the treaty by producing new missiles," Czaputowicz told reporters.

He added, however, that Poland wanted the agreement to function but only if both sides remained committed to it.

The landmark arms control treaty was signed by former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev and then-US President Ronald Reagan in 1987. The sides agreed to destroy all cruise or ground-launched ballistic missiles that have ranges between 500 and 5,500 kilometers (310 miles and 3,400 miles).
