Polish Foreign Minister Accuses Moscow of Violating NATO-Russia Founding Act

Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz responded on Monday to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's accusing Warsaw of violating the NATO-Russia Founding Act by claiming that the document's provisions had earlier been breached by Moscow.

WARSAW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd October, 2018) Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz responded on Monday to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's accusing Warsaw of violating the NATO-Russia Founding Act by claiming that the document's provisions had earlier been breached by Moscow.

On Thursday, Lavrov stated that Poland's plans to deploy a US military division on its territory on a permanent basis would constitute a direct violation of the NATO-Russia Founding Act, adding that Moscow would closely monitor the issue.

"It is impossible to violate what has previously been violated by Russia. This treaty does not work due to Russia's actions ... It is Russia that violates the act's provisions, in particular, by carrying out unauthorized drills near the bloc's borders. You cannot violate something that has already been violated. I believe that the argument [about the act's violation] cannot be used," Czaputowicz indicated.

In September, US President Donald Trump said following talks with his Polish counterpart Andrzej Duda that Washington was considering setting up a permanent military base in Poland.

The NATO-Russia Founding Act, signed in 1997, outlined the major pillars of relations between the country and the bloc and since then served as a road map for cooperation between the two parties.
