Construction of water reservoirs is collective responsibility of nation: CJ

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 21st Oct, 2018 ) :Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar Saturday said construction of water reservoirs was a collective responsibility of the whole nation, not only one department.

The chief justice expressed these views while addressing the concluding session of the two-day International Symposium titled "Creating Water Secure Pakistan" on Saturday evening here at Supreme Court building.

Justice Nisar said Article 184-C of the Constitution called upon the judiciary to enforce and protect fundamental rights of people.

He said water was a natural resource and its conservation and management was incumbent upon us, warning that life would gradually become extinct in the country in case of non availability of water.

To secure the future of Pakistan, there was a dire need to call for immediate steps to prevent wastage of water and protect water resources through regulatory system.

He said there should be a council regarding Diamar Bhasha Dam. He said WAPDA was an important institution regarding water storage, but this responsibility should not be laid merely on it.

"Pakistan is a country having rich natural resources, but there is a need to utilize them in order to meet our national requirements," the CJ said, adding, "no one will come from abroad to overcome our crises but we ourselves have to dedicate our services to the nation".

Justice Nisar said no one had paid attention towards water conservation in Pakistan in last four decades, and if we failed yet to take practical steps to overcome the situation then our next generations would not forgive us, he added.

He said being a custodian of the Constitution, the apex court would protect fundamental rights of masses and my visits to the hospitals were part of this practice. Before criticizing me people should think that what was wrong if I visited the hospitals just to look after the poor people who came there for treatment. Isn't it my duty under the constitution, he asked.

"I appealed the young generation to love their country just like they love their mothers as it provided us shelter, respect, protection, freedom and many more and now it is the time to return all these with interest", he added.

The CJ said, "We are the custodian of the donations given by people across the country and from overseas Pakistanis for the construction of dams". I will not allow anyone to waste people's money donated for the dams, he added.

The chief justice also thanked all the international guests arrived to participate in the Symposium. "We are thankful to all the honorable guests arrived to share their valuable suggestions with us".

He especially thanked the guest from Australia who took part in the conference.
