Russia Ready to Implement Railway Project With Seoul, Pyongyang - Putin

Russia is ready to implement railway, energy and pipeline projects with Seoul and Pyongyang, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday, adding that joint work in the economic field was useful for political dialogue.

SOCHI (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 18th October, 2018) Russia is ready to implement railway, energy and pipeline projects with Seoul and Pyongyang, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday, adding that joint work in the economic field was useful for political dialogue.

"We could still implement the tripartite plans that we have talked about many times. [The plans] to connect railways of South Korea and North [Korea] with Russia. These are energy bridges, pipeline transportation from Russia through North Korea to the South, including gas routes," Putin said at the Valdai Discussion Club forum in the Russian city of Sochi.

Joint work in the economic sphere unites and creates conditions for solving political issues, the president added.

South Korea is currently trying to revive an old project of the Khasan-Rajin railway that would deliver cargo from Russia to North Korean city of Rajin, so that it could then be shipped to South Korea by sea.

On Monday, media reported that Seoul and Pyongyang had agreed to hold a ceremony for the launch of work on interconnecting roads and railways through the buffer zone that separates the countries in late November or early December.

On June 22, Russian Railways and South Korea's Korail signed a memorandum of understanding on bilateral cooperation. The sides agreed to study the conditions for arranging rail traffic between South Korea, Russia and Europe, including a trilateral project of connecting the Trans-Korean Railway and the Trans-Siberian Highway. The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the talks between Putin and his South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in in Moscow.
