Syrian Ambassador Doubts De Mistura Departure to Affect Constitutional Committee Formation

The upcoming resignation of UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura will not affect the ongoing formation of the Syrian constitutional committee, Syrian Ambassador to Russia Riyad Haddad said on Thursday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 18th October, 2018) The upcoming resignation of UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura will not affect the ongoing formation of the Syrian constitutional committee, Syrian Ambassador to Russia Riyad Haddad said on Thursday.

De Mistura said on Wednesday he would quit in the last week of November due to personal reasons. The diplomat has been working as the UN special envoy for Syria since 2014.

"I think de Mistura's resignation will not affect the establishment of the constitutional committee. All other measures were taken earlier. In the future, everything will be fine, regardless of his resignation," Haddad said.

When asked to suggest whether the work of the committee would be launched before the resignation, the ambassador noted that the question should be addressed to de Mistura himself.

The creation of the Syrian constitutional committee was agreed upon during the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in the Russian resort city of Sochi in late January. De Mistura is in charge of forming the body that is tasked with rewriting the Syrian main law.
