UNHCR Says Preparations Continue for UN/SARC Aid Convoy From Damascus to Rukban Camp

The preparations for a joint convoy of the United Nations and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC), from Damascus to Rukban refugee camp in Syria, are underway, Mysa Khalaf, the UN Refugee Agency's (UNHCR) spokesperson for Syria, told Sputnik on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 17th October, 2018) The preparations for a joint convoy of the United Nations and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC), from Damascus to Rukban refugee camp in Syria, are underway, Mysa Khalaf, the UN Refugee Agency's (UNHCR) spokesperson for Syria, told Sputnik on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, the Reuters news agency reported that the Syrian government had given its approval to the UN Aid delivery.

"UN preparations continue for a joint UN/SARC convoy from Damascus, which would provide essential life-saving assistance to those in need," Khalaf said, when asked to confirm if the Syrian authorities had approved the passage of the convoy.

The camp is located near the Syrian-Jordanian border, close to a US military base.

Ahmad Qazem, the head of the Syrian Network for Human Rights, told Sputnik last week that 14 people had died in the camp because of a dire humanitarian situation. According to the rights activists, the situation in the camp had been complicated by the closure of a nearby border crossing.

Since 2011, Syria has been gripped by a violent armed conflict that pushed millions of Syrians to flee their homes or the country altogether.
