Trend Of Kitchen Gardening Witnesses Upsurge In Federal Capital

A large number of residents in the federal capital still prefer to opt for kitchen gardening to get pure veggies at their doorsteps despite abundance and free flow of vegetables in the markets as these were mainly grown with the help of chemical boosters.
ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 16th Oct, 2018 ) :A large number of residents in the Federal capital still prefer to opt for kitchen gardening to get pure veggies at their doorsteps despite abundance and free flow of vegetables in the markets as these were mainly grown with the help of chemical boosters.
Abbas Khan, an Islamabad based kitchen gardener, said that growing of gourds was the easiest way for the veggies buff. When I resorted to growing vegetables, people told that you could grow anything if you have patience.
He further told APP that some of the commonly sown vegetables in winter season were winter onions, cornflower, cauliflower, purple turnip, spinach, carrot, radish, desi saag, cabbage, lettuce, red Russain, salad and mint.
Dr Abdul islam an agronomist expert from Arid University told APP that kitchen gardening was the only possible way to grow healthy organic food without pesticides hazards.
He said the kitchen gardening was not too much expensive, adding that one could easily afford it from their pocket money, adding that another benefits of the kitchen gardening was to easily multiply the favourite plants by tip cutting, so that get their roots stronger and healthier.
He said the sowing in winter started in the mild temperature month of September and October while fruiting continued till April.
There is a dire need to educate people about the benefits of kitchen gardening, said Dr Abdul Islam. He further said the government has to introduce modern technology and practices to meet the food requirement of growing population and boost country's economy, adding that awareness programme should be launched to sensitize and public regarding basics of kitchen gardening, adding that the universities should also provide their services to arrange seminars and workshop for public awareness and benefits.
He said the seeds of winter crops should be distributed among the residents in order to promote kitchen gardening in the country.
