SC suspends service charges on postpaid numbers

CJP Nisar says if a man loads a Rs 100 card, why should he pay to the province

Lahore (Pakistan Point News – 16th October, 2018) The Supreme Court has suspended service charges on postpaid numbers.

A three-member Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar held the hearing on increased tax reductions on mobile services on Tuesday.

During the hearing, Punjab advocate general said that Punjab will bear a loss of Rs 2 billion monthly after the suspension of service charges.

To this, CJP Nisar said, “Charging extra taxes is also a loss. If a man loads a Rs 100 card, why should he pay to the province.”

“Will a person getting a roti from Tandoor would also have to pay tax?” the CJP remarked.

The Sindh advocate general then said that the province is facing a loss of Rs 1 billion in a month; to which, the CJP said you can shelve the kickbacks you are receiving, Rs 1 billion is not going to make any difference.

“Restrict the money being sent abroad through ships,” he said.

The Sindh advocate general said that he wants to give arguments in the case. The Federal, Punjab and Balochistan governments also sought more time from the court in the case.

Suspended additional taxes on postpaid numbers by the telecommunication companies, the CJP said we will listen to you later and adjourned the hearing on additional taxes on mobile phone cards and easy loads was adjourned till six months.
