Russian Delegation Discusses Syrian Crisis Settlement With Saudi Foreign Minister - Moscow

Russian delegation has discussed the development of the situation in Syria and the settlement of the Syrian crisis with Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Jubeir, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th October, 2018) The Russian delegation has discussed the development of the situation in Syria and the settlement of the Syrian crisis with Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Jubeir, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

The high-level delegation that comprises Russian Special Presidential Envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentyev, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin and representatives of the Russian Defense Ministry paid a working visit to Saudi Arabia on Sunday and Monday. They were received by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and also held talks with Jubeir.

"There was a detailed exchange of opinions on the situation in the middle East and Northern Africa, with a focus on the development of the situation in Syria. A common understanding of the necessity of a final elimination of the terrorist hubs in the country, and of the importance of promptly finding a reliable long-term political settlement to the Syrian crisis has been voiced," the ministry said in a statement.

Since 2011, Syrian has been in a state of a civil war, with the government forces fighting numerous opposition and terrorist groups across the country. While Damascus has regained control over most of the country's territories, the northwestern Syrian province of Idlib remains the last stronghold of insurgency. The Syrian government is currently focused on eliminating terrorists from Idlib, and also on creating favorable conditions for the refugees return.

Russia, along Turkey and Iran, is a guarantor of the ceasefire in Syria. It has been actively supporting Damascus in its fight against terrorists. By October 22, a demilitarized zone is set to be created in Idlib, and armed radicals are set to leave the area, as provided by the memorandum that Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed in September.
