MULTAN, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 13th Oct, 2018 ) :The speakers urged peoples to take precautionary measures and follow traffic rules during smog.
They were addressing at a seminar on smog arranged by Nishtar Hospital in-collaboration with Motorway Police and Department of Environmental Sciences Bahauddin Zakariya University here on Saturday.
They said that smog is a kind of air pollution, originally named for the mixture of smoke and fog in the air and it affects visibility, human health as well as crops. The problem of smog is being observed for last few years in the country, they added.
Vice Chancellor Nishtar Medical Institute Dr Mustafa Kamal Pasha, addressing the participants, explained the multidisciplinary approach of different departments for organizing the seminar on smog.
He stressed upon citizens to take special care especially during smog season. He urged them to follow traffic rules to avoid accidents.
Head of Pulmonology, Dr Professor Azam Mushtaq stated that the citizens should restrict their outdoor movements. The citizens should develop habit of breathing through nose in smoggy conditions. Similarly, indoor exercises should be done instead of outdoor during smog days.
About effects of the smog, he informed the smog could cause eye and nose irritation as it dries out the protective membranes of the nose and throat and interferes with the body's ability to fight infection, increasing susceptibility to illness.
He added that ground-level ozone, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide carbon monoxide are especially harmful for senior citizens, children, and people with heart and lung conditions such as emphysema, bronchitis, and asthma.
It can inflamed breathing passages, decreasing the lungs' working capacity, and causing shortness of breath, pain when inhaling deeply, wheezing, and coughing, he added.
Motorway Police Officials Muhammad Asghar Shahid and Gulzaar Hussain, speaking on the occasion, stated that the citizens should avoid unnecessary travelling during smoggy atmosphere. The drivers should adjust dense fog lights at their vehicles, they said.
They supported inclusion of traffic rules and regulation in curriculum for awareness of the youth. He advised that citizens should keep vehicles away from one another by three second in routine days.
However, during smog, it should be nine seconds.
