The UAE and South Korea have agreed to strengthen cooperation and supporting channels of communication between the countries.

SEOUL, (Pakistan Point News - 12th Oct, 2018) The UAE and South Korea have agreed to strengthen cooperation and supporting channels of communication between the countries.

The two sides expressed satisfaction at the development of strong strategic relations between the UAE and South Korea.

The two parties stated that the follow-up measures taken after the bilateral summit held between the two countries during the official visit of the President of the Republic of South Korea, Moon Jae-in, to the UAE in March last year are being steadily implemented.

This was said during the first meeting of the Diplomatic and Security Dialogue at the level of the under-secretaries of the UAE and Korean Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defence, which was held today in Seoul as part of the follow-up to what was accomplished in the March summit.

During the meeting, they discussed ways to develop close strategic relations between the two countries and enhancing cooperation in the defence and defence industry sectors.

The two sides also tackled the current situation in the middle East and the Korean Peninsula and cooperation on the international scene.

The UAE delegation was chaired by Matar Salim Al Dhaheri, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, and Ambassador Khalifa Shaheen Al-Marar, Assistant Foreign Minister for Political Affairs, while the South Korean side was led by Vice Minister of National Defence, Suh Choo-suk, and Deputy Minister for Political Affairs, Yoon Soon-gu, of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Al Dhaheri and Al-Marar hoped for the fostering of cooperation between the two countries in the diplomatic and security fields as they are pioneering partners in their efforts for peace and stability in the region.

Suh Choo-suk, South Korea’s Vice Minister for National Defence expressed the hope that through this meeting, the two countries would strengthen their relationship and further strengthen the mutually beneficial cooperation.

Yoon Soon-gu, Deputy Foreign Minister of South Korea for Political Affairs, described the meeting as a symbol of the close ties between the two countries that adds an institutional touch to their strategic cooperation in diplomatic and defence fields.

The South Korean side made a presentation on the progress made between the two Koreas and the developments since the last summit on dismantling nuclear weapons in the Korean Peninsula, which was held earlier this year in Pyongyang. The Korean side expressed appreciation for the support given by the UAE for the talks.

The UAE side congratulated its Korean counterpart for the positive developments and expressed the hope that the improving relations between the two Koreas will provide an impetus towards reaching a political solution for the complex situation in the Middle East.

The UAE side also highlighted the country’s vision for restoring hope and maintaining stability in the Middle East, as well as supporting the legitimate government in Yemen and helping it to regain sovereignty over the entire Yemeni territories. As a strategic partner, the Korean side was urged to play a more active role in support of peace and stability in the Middle East.

The Korean side expressed appreciation for the UAE’s active role in providing support to political solutions in the Middle East, combating terrorism and extremism and boosting the Arab engagement in resolving and confronting the negative interventions in the region.

The two sides agreed that the "Two Plus Two" dialogue represents an opportunity to strengthen the strategic partnership, developed during the visit of the South Korean President to the UAE in March.
