"If necessary, the period can be extended," the ministry said in a statement quoted by South Korea's Yonhap news agency.
This will be the eighth round of talks where Washington will try to convince its ally to raise by 50 percent its annual contribution. Its share stands at $848.6 million.
The publication said the United States wanted South Korea to pay, in particular, for the regular and emergency deployment of its stealth fighters, aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines.
