A court in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, sentenced on Wednesday former Prime Minister Lutfozzaman Babar and 18 other people to death over their involvement in the deadly grenade attack of 2004, local media reported.

NEW DELHI (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 10th October, 2018) A court in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, sentenced on Wednesday former Prime Minister Lutfozzaman Babar and 18 other people to death over their involvement in the deadly grenade attack of 2004, local media reported.

According to the Dhaka Tribune newspaper, 19 other offenders, including Tarique Rahman, the leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), were sentenced to life in prison, while 11 more offenders received various jail terms.

The attack, which a group of leaders from the BNP and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami party staged in cooperation with some senior Bangladeshi officials, was carried out in Dhaka on August 21, 2004. It left 24 people dead, including Ivy Rahman, the leader of the Bangladesh ruling party Awami League, and over 300 others injured, including Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was a priority target. The attack was conducted during an Awami League rally.
