Greek Defense Minister Hails 'Very Close' Cooperation With United States

Greece and the United States have built very close defense cooperation, which includes US military aid to Athens, Defense Minister Panos Kammenos said on Wednesday during his visit to Washington.

ATHENS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 10th October, 2018) Greece and the United States have built very close defense cooperation, which includes US military aid to Athens, Defense Minister Panos Kammenos said on Wednesday during his visit to Washington.

"In the last three years, Greece and the United States have established very close defense cooperation, working on such programs as the upgrade of F16 and P-3 Orion aircraft. Moreover, we have received free military aid from the United States including very important equipment such as Chinook and Kiowa helicopters, and other equipment that should not be made public," Kammenos told reporters after a meeting with US Defense Secretary James Mattis.

The Greek minister said he believed that the sides could sign joint defense agreements, "which will help to resolve outstanding issues and will have a significant impact on the formation of a new energy policy" in the region.

"We should not forget that we are facing new threats such as cyberwar. If provided to Greece, satellite data and other new tools developed by the United States could help a lot in the Greek defense policy," the minister stressed.

During the visit, Kammenos also met with US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Wess Mitchell and Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan.
