Russian National Nikulin May Be Transferred to Clinic After Mental Health Tests - Lawyer

The doctor of Russian national Yevgeniy Nikulin, who is accused by US authorities of hacking social networks, may recommend to transfer him to a hospital after examining his case, Nikulin's lawyer Arkady Bukh told Sputnik

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 09th October, 2018) The doctor of Russian national Yevgeniy Nikulin, who is accused by US authorities of hacking social networks, may recommend to transfer him to a hospital after examining his case, Nikulin's lawyer Arkady Bukh told Sputnik.

The next hearing on his case will be held later on Tuesday.

"[If] the doctor recommends hospitalization following an interview and examination of documents, and the judge agrees with this recommendation (he can also request the opinion of another expert), and Nikulin himself will not object it, the defense will not object either," Bukh said

The lawyer added that, in accordance with the practice, prisoners usually do not object to such a change of detention conditions.

In mid-August, Bukh said that a US judge on Nikulin's case had approved his psychiatric examination, adding that the judge would decide whether or not Nikulin was capable or incapable of standing trial based on psychiatrist's report.

At the same time, Nikulin refused to meet with a psychiatrist several times.

In 2016, Nikulin was arrested in the Czech Republic on a US warrant for allegedly hacking into computers belonging to LinkedIn, Dropbox and the Formspring online services. Czech authorities extradited Nikulin to the United States on March 29. Nikulin pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.

Russian authorities, who charged Nikulin with internet fraud in 2009, requested his extradition on the same day as the United States, but the Czech Justice Ministry granted the US request. Russia's Foreign Ministry said Moscow was outraged by the decision of the Czech authorities to extradite Nikulin to the United States.
