The Interpol said on Friday it was aware of the media reports on the "alleged" disappearance of the organization's president, Meng Hongwei, but stressed that this was a matter for "the relevant authorities" in France and China.

Earlier in the day, French media reported that the Interpol president has been missing since he traveled to China in late September. His spouse went to the police to signal his disappearance.

"We are aware of media reports in connection with the alleged disappearance of INTERPOL President Meng Hongwei. This is a matter for the relevant authorities in both France and China," the INTERPOL said in a statement.

According to media reports, the investigation into the disappearance of Meng was launched in France's Lyon where the Interpol is headquartered.
