Austria to Allocate $1.15Mln in Humanitarian Aid to Quake-Hit Indonesia - Foreign Minister

Austria will allocate one million euros ($1.15 million) in humanitarian assistance to Indonesia in order to help the country recover after a deadly earthquake and tsunami hit the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl said on Tuesday.

VIENNA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 02nd October, 2018) Austria will allocate one million Euros ($1.15 million) in humanitarian assistance to Indonesia in order to help the country recover after a deadly earthquake and tsunami hit the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl said on Tuesday.

"The Federal government will allocate one million euros from its Foreign Disaster Fund in order to help Indonesia cope with the humanitarian situation after earthquake and tsunami," Kneissl said, as quoted by the Austrian Foreign Ministry's press service.

The aid will be provided to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Sulawesi. The Austrian government, in cooperation with the federation, will primarily focus on providing local residents with food, water, temporary accommodation, protective shelters for children, as well as healthcare products and services.

On Friday, a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake, and two 5.8-magnitude earthquakes hit Sulawesi. After the tremors, a 2-meter-high (6.5-feet-high) tsunami struck the city of Palu and the Donggala area in Central Sulawesi. According to the latest media reports, the disaster has claimed over 1,200 lives.

The global community has actively engaged in supporting Indonesia, with South Korea allocating $1 million in humanitarian assistance. The French, US and Turkish leaders also voiced their willingness to help, while the United Nations mobilized its rescue and relief efforts. The International Monetary Fund has pledged to raise funds among its management and staff.
