"On September 28, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko met with the deputy secretary general for political affairs of the European External Action Service, Jean-Christophe Belliard, and the political director of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs, Alexander Marschik, on the sidelines of the 73rd UN General Assembly in New York," the ministry said in a statement.

The sides "thoroughly discussed the state and the prospects of Russia-EU relations with a focus on the search of opportunities to cooperate in the areas of mutual interest," the statement said.

The officials also exchanged views on the situation in Syria, the Balkans and Ukraine.

The relations between Russia and the European Union have deteriorated in connection with the developments in Ukraine and the situation with Crimea.
