Iraqi Kurdistan's Legislative Election Being Held Without Violations - Election Commission

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 30th September, 2018) The election in Iraqi Kurdistan's parliament is being held without violations, but with a low voter turnout, the Iraqi High Electoral Commission told Sputnik on Sunday.

According to the commission, the voter turnout just exceeded 15 percent in the first half of the day.

Meanwhile, the election process is ongoing without any violations, according to Jan Kubis, the special representative of the UN secretary-general for the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq.

On Sunday, the regional parliamentary election is being held in Iraqi Kurdistan for the first time since the declaration of the victory over the Islamic State terrorist group (banned in Russia) in the country. The main frontrunners are the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), as well as the Change Movement (Gorran) and the Kurdistan Islamic Group (Komal).

The election initially should have been held last November, however, was delayed due to an acute political crisis between Iraqi Kurdistan's capital of Erbil and the Federal capital of Baghdad, triggered by the region's independence referendum.
