The Conservation Team at Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, DEWA, visited 18 schools and pre-schools in Dubai at its annual participation in the Marhaba Madrasati (Welcome my School) initiative, organised by Dubai Education Zone during the new academic year.
DUBAI, (Pakistan Point News - 28th Sep, 2018) The Conservation Team at Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, DEWA, visited 18 schools and pre-schools in Dubai at its annual participation in the Marhaba Madrasati (Welcome my School) initiative, organised by Dubai Education Zone during the new academic year.
The visits are part of DEWA’s efforts to establish a culture of responsible use of resources among society members, especially students. The team targeted over 5,500 students in all grades, through interactive workshops in a simple and interesting manner, to remind them to preserve precious natural resources and avoid waste. The team also handed out gifts to the students and encouraged them to start the new academic year with positivity, interest, and perseverance.
"In order to achieve the vision of the leadership for sustainable development and transforming Dubai into a global hub for clean energy and green economy, we launch awareness initiatives and campaigns to consolidate a culture of the responsible use of resources in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors as well as educational institutions, government and semi-government organisations, and society as a whole. This supports the Demand Management Strategy, which aims to reduce energy and water use by 30 percent by 2030," said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA.
"Each year, DEWA organises hundreds of awareness lectures in the educational sector to introduce the new generation to the importance of using electricity and water responsibly and preserving precious natural resources. DEWA participates in the Marhaba Madrasati initiative organised by the Dubai Education Zone during the first week of the school year. This initiative is an ideal opportunity to establish a culture of rationalisation among students, introduce them to the concept of sustainability and inform them about the best practices to reduce electricity and water consumption at schools and their homes, to conserve natural resources for future generations to come," said Khawla Al Mehairi, Executive Vice President of Strategy and Government Communications at DEWA.
"This year, the educational establishments participating in the 12th Conservation Award achieved unprecedented results in rationalising consumption. They reduced 92 GWh of electricity and over 133 million gallons of water. This helped reduce over 43,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to financial savings estimated at about AED46 million. During the past 12 years, DEWA has organised 1,424 lectures, benefitting nearly 353,000 students. The savings achieved by educational establishments, students and faculty during this period amounted to 249GWh of electricity, and 1.5 billion gallons of water, translating to the reduction of 133,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. These cumulative savings are equivalent to approximately AED168 million," said Amal Koshak, Vice President – Marketing and Corporate Communications at DEWA.
DEWA organises the Conservation Award in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, KHDA, in Dubai to recognise the achievements of the education sector in rationalising their consumption of electricity and water and preserving natural resources.
