WWF Environmental Group Urges Russian Ships in Arctic to Switch to LNG

World Wildlife Fund, an international environmental watchdog, has urged Russia to switch its ships in the Arctic to cleaner liquefied natural gas (LNG) to avoid oil spills.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th September, 2018) World Wildlife Fund, an international environmental watchdog, has urged Russia to switch its ships in the Arctic to cleaner liquefied natural gas (LNG) to avoid oil spills.

"The rise in navigation in the Arctic will inevitably raise the risk of oil spills. A switch from heavy oil fuel to LNG is a drastic measure that would change this," WWF Russia said in a research published on Wednesday.

WWF has been advocating for the use of LNG to fuel ocean-going ships. The UN-backed International Maritime Organization (IMO) agreed in April to draft rules banning fuel oil with a high sulfur content, the WWF Russia coordinator for oil and gas in the Barents Sea, Vadim Krasnoselsky, said on Wednesday.
