Russia Hopes US Sanctions Do Not Spread to Healthcare Sphere - Minister

Moscow is hopeful US sanctions do not affect the sphere of healthcare and protection of life, Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova told reporters on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

UNITED NATIONS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th September, 2018) Moscow is hopeful US sanctions do not affect the sphere of healthcare and protection of life, Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova told reporters on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

"Now, the sanctions don't apply to this humanitarian sphere of healthcare and protection of life," Skvortsova said on Wednesday. "We are very hopeful... they won't allow sanctions to spread into this sphere."

The Russian delegation, she added, were met as winners at the UNGA given the country is a leader on issues like tuberculosis and non-communicable diseases.

Earlier in the day, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov told Sputnik that US officials are unsuccessfully trying to satisfy their geopolitical ambitions through new sanctions. Ryabkov highlighted that Russian entities and individuals were included in US sanctions lists eight times in August and September alone.

Most US anti-Russian sanctions have targeted critical economic sectors including the defense and energy industries as well as government officials and business leaders. US lawmakers have recently proposed legislation to restrict financial transactions tied to Russia's sovereign debt.

Washington has imposed several rounds of sanctions on Russia over allegedly meddling in the 2016 US presidential election, poisoning double agent Sergei Skripal, and interfering in Ukraine affairs, among other reasons - accusations Russian officials have repeatedly denied as groundless.
