Russia, China Must Ensure Enforcement Of UN Sanctions On N. Korea - US Treasury Official

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th September, 2018) Russia and China should make more effort to comply with United Nations Security Council sanctions against North Korea, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Marshall Billingslea said in testimony to a congressional hearing on Wednesday.

"It is incumbent for both Russian and Chinese to step up and enforce the UN Security Council resolutions," Billingslea told the House Committee on Financial Services.

He added that the main area of concern regarding North Korea's evasion of sanctions is the ship-to-ship transfers of coal and oil. The United States has accused Moscow of allowing petroleum transfers to North Korea and has imposed sanctions on two Russian shipping companies and six vessels in response.

Billingslea said Washington continues to flag countries engaged in financialoperations with Pyongyang and immediately addresses these violations.

The official said as of now he cannot certify that Russia fully enforces UN Security Council resolutions on North Korea. The Security Council has restricted oil and gas exports to Pyongyang and banned imports of textile products from North Korea, among other measures, in response to its repeated missile launches and nuclear tests.
