WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th September, 2018) The Trump administration is going to sell leases in March 2019 to drill for offshore oil and a gas in an area covering 78 million acres in the Gulf of Mexico, the US Department of the Interior announced in a press release on Tuesday.

"Deputy Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt and Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) Acting Director Walter Cruickshank today announced that BOEM proposes to offer 78 million acres for a region-wide lease sale scheduled for March 2019," the release stated.

The sale would include all available areas in Federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico that have not been leased, the Interior Department explained.

"The development of our offshore energy resources is a major pillar of this Administration's energy strategy," Bernhardt said in the release.

Lease Sale 252 will include approximately 14,696 unleased blocks, located from three to 231 miles offshore, in the Gulf's Western, Central and Eastern planning areas in water depths ranging from nine to more than 11,115 feet (three to 3,400 meters), the Interior Department said.
