Turkey's Erzurum Made No Request to Sochi About Hosting Part of 2026 Olympics - Official

The authorities of the Turkish city of Erzurum that is currently battling for the right to host the 2026 Winter Olympic Games has not contacted Sochi regarding the proposal to organize part of the competitions in the Russian city, a spokesperson of the Turkish city administration told Sputnik on Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th September, 2018) The authorities of the Turkish city of Erzurum that is currently battling for the right to host the 2026 Winter Olympic Games has not contacted Sochi regarding the proposal to organize part of the competitions in the Russian city, a spokesperson of the Turkish city administration told Sputnik on Tuesday.

Earlier in September, Turkish media reported citing Governor of the city Seyfettin Azizoglu that Erzurum suggested organizing part of the games in Sochi that hosted the Winter Olympics in 2014 and already has all the necessary facilities.

"At the moment, there have been no requests [to Sochi] and no work has been done in that direction. If Erzurum wins the bid to host the Olympics, then we can discuss this question. However, we have not made any official announcements yet, the governor was talking only about a hypothetical possibility of such talks," the spokesperson said.

The city that will host the 2026 Winter Olympics will be announced in September 2019. The right to host the games is contested by Sweden, Canada and Italy as well as Turkey.
