Cuban President to Criticize US Economic Embargo at UN General Assembly

HAVANA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 24th September, 2018) Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said on Monday that he was going to denounce the US trade embargo on Cuba during his address at the UN General Assembly, which is currently underway in New York.

While the 73rd UN General Assembly started on September 18 and will last until October 5, the working week that started on Monday is expected to be the most intense one.

"We bring the voice of Cuba, and we came there, first of all, to denounce the deviant policy of the blockade that has already failed and will continue to fail, and that is the longest blockade in the history of humanity," Diaz-Canel told reporters.

The president noted the deterioration of the US-Cuban relations, stressing that the administration of US President Donald Trump had returned to the Cold War rhetoric.

According to Diaz-Canel, Cuba sought to establish "civilized relations" with the United States, even though the two countries had different ideologies.

The US-Cuban relations have been tense for over 50 years, since the United States introduced a trade embargo against Cuba in 1962. In December 2014, Barack Obama, who was then the US president, announced that Washington was willing to normalize ties with Havana. In July 2015, the countries reestablished their diplomatic relations, but although a number of agreements were signed, the embargo was not lifted. In June 2017, Trump announced that his administration would review Obama's policy toward Cuba, and reaffirm the existing embargo, opposing the UN and other international organizations' calls for its termination.
