ATHENS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 21st September, 2018) The Greek authorities began to relieve the overcrowded refugee and migrant Moria camp on the island of Lesbos, sending 100 people to the city of Kavala by ferry, the Greek Ministry of Migration Policy told reporters.
By the end of September, it is planned to relocate 2,000 people from the camp. Asylum seekers will be transported from Kavala to Thessaloniki, where a camp for 1,200 people has been built, the officials added.
"The purpose of mass transportation of refugees is to improve the conditions in the Moria reception and identification center," the ministry noted.
In October, some 1,000 asylum seekers will go from Lesbos to a camp near Preveza.
Over 10,000 migrants are living on Lesbos. Around 9,000 are staying in Moria camp, although its capacity is only 3,100 people, according to UN figures.
