Russia, Afghanistan Discuss Preparation For Moscow Format Talks - Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 21st September, 2018) The Russian and the Afghan side discussed on Thursday the preparation for the Moscow-format talks on Afghanistan's conflict, Russia's Foreign Ministry said.

The meeting was held between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov and his Afghan counterpart Nasir Andisha.

"There was a discussion of the issues of Russian-Afghan relations, as well as the preparation for the next meeting of the Moscow format of consultations in order to facilitate the early launch of the process of national reconciliation in Afghanistan," the ministry's statement read.

In August, the consultations on Afghanistan in the Moscow format scheduled for September 4 were postponed following a phone call between Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The meeting was reportedly postponed over the reshuffle in the Afghan government.

Afghanistan has long been in a state of turmoil, with the government fighting the Islamic State (IS) terror group, outlawed in Russia as well as the Taliban insurgency.
