US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Joseph Dunford and his South Korean counterpart Gen. Jeong Kyeongdoo agreed during a telephone conversation on Thursday to maintain their countries' close relationship on security issues, Joint Chiefs spokesman Patrick Ryder said in a press release.
WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th September, 2018) US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Joseph Dunford and his South Korean counterpart Gen. Jeong Kyeongdoo agreed during a telephone conversation on Thursday to maintain their countries' close relationship on security issues, Joint Chiefs spokesman Patrick Ryder said in a press release.
"The two leaders discussed the current security environment around the Korean Peninsula," Ryder said in the release. "They committed to continuing close cooperation as allies and to maintaining close coordination on mutual security issues of interest."
Dunford also congratulated Jeong on his nomination as South Korea's new defense minister.
On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement that representatives from the United States and North Korea will meet in Vienna as soon as possible to discuss important commitments North Korea made during a three-day summit with South Korea earlier this week.
Pompeo said that he also invited his North Korean counterpart for a meeting while the two are in New York City next week for the UN General Assembly gathering. The meetings will mark the beginning of a process to denuclearize North Korea by January 2021 as per the commitment of the country's leader Kim Jong Un.
