EU, US Representatives to Continue Meetings to Discuss Trade Relations - Spokesman

Trade representatives of the European Commission and the United States will continue their meetings to discuss the July trade agreements reached by US President Donald Trump and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, EU Commission Spokesperson for Trade and Agriculture Daniel Rosario said Thursday.

BRUSSELS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th September, 2018) Trade representatives of the European Commission and the United States will continue their meetings to discuss the July trade agreements reached by US President Donald Trump and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, EU Commission Spokesperson for Trade and Agriculture Daniel Rosario said Thursday.

Trump and Juncker came to a consensus in July to refrain from imposing any new tit-for-tat tariffs while negotiating future arrangements for trans-Atlantic trade.

"There was a meeting on September 10 between Commissioner [Cecilia] Malmstrom and US Trade Representative [Robert Lighthizer], and they will meet again next week in New York on September 25 to follow up on these discussions. An additional meeting is already tentatively scheduled for November, and also other contacts at different levels are taking place in the meantime," Rosario said.

Earlier in September, Malmstrom and Lighthizer already met once to discuss the implementation of agreements reached by Trump and Juncker.

Trump has heralded his July 25 agreement with Juncker as the start of a "new phase" in trans-Atlantic trade relations. Prior to striking the deal, the United States and European Union were locked in what appeared to be an escalating trade war, with both sides threatening to impose rounds of reciprocal tariffs on automobiles, agricultural and high-tech goods.
