South Korean President to Visit US to Facilitate US-North Korean Dialogue - Spokesman

South Korean President Moon Jae-in's visit to North Korea will be followed by his trip to the United States, where he will help promote dialogue between Washington and Pyongyang, South Korean presidential spokesman Yoon Young-chan said on Thursday.

SEOUL (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th September, 2018) South Korean President Moon Jae-in's visit to North Korea will be followed by his trip to the United States, where he will help promote dialogue between Washington and Pyongyang, South Korean presidential spokesman Yoon Young-chan said on Thursday.

Earlier in the day, a Sputnik correspondent reported that Moon and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited Mountain Paektu, located near the North Korean-Chinese border. After visiting the holy site, Moon will return to Seoul following his two-day visit to North Korea for a summit with Kim.

"After his return from Pyongyang, the president will go to the United Nations General Assembly [in New York]. In the United States, he will facilitate the dialogue between the United States and the North and he hopes for the building of bridges to the future," Yoon told a press briefing in Seoul.

Earlier in September, the White House said that Moon will meet US President Donald Trump during the UN General Assembly session.

Moon's trip to Pyongyang marked the third meeting between the South Korean president and the North Korean leader amid burgeoning diplomacy on the Korean Peninsula. During their recent talks, Kim committed to the demolition of a North Korean missile engine test site. The two sides also reached various military agreements, including ending artillery exercises and flights near the demilitarized zone between the two countries.

North Korea's relations with the United States, South Korea's long-time ally, have been improving, too. In June, Kim and US President Donald Trump held a landmark summit, during which they expressed their commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. The tensions between the parties, however, remain, as Washington and Pyongyang lack progress in the denuclearization process.
