IOC Welcomes Two Koreas' Plan to Bid for 2032 Olympics - Committee's Head

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) welcomes the intention of South and North Korea to submit a joint application for hosting the 2032 Summer Olympic Games, IOC President Thomas Bach said Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 19th September, 2018) The International Olympic Committee (IOC) welcomes the intention of South and North Korea to submit a joint application for hosting the 2032 Summer Olympic Games, IOC President Thomas Bach said Wednesday.

According to the joint statement on the results of the inter-Korean summit in Pyongyang, the two countries agreed to send a unified team of athletes to the 2020 Olympic Games and to jointly bid for hosting the 2032 Games.

"The International Olympic Committee (IOC) welcomes very much the intention of the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to jointly host the Olympic Games 2032. After we opened the door for political talks with the joint march of the two Korean teams at the Olympic Winter Games Pyeongchang 2018, sport could once more make a contribution to peace on the Korean Peninsula and the world," Bach told the insidethegames outlet.

According to Bach, he told the leaders of the two Koreas that the IOC supported the rapprochement between the countries through sport.

"In my talks with the leaders of the two countries, the IOC committed itself to continue to support the rapprochement between the two Koreas through sport by supporting athletes and enabling their participation in international competitions and promoting sports exchanges between the two countries," he said.

As result of the summit, held on Tuesday and Wednesday, Seoul and Pyongyang signed a military agreement to cease large-scale artillery exercises and military flights near the demilitarized zone.
