"The Lebanese Foreign Ministry condemns Israeli air strikes on Syria. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its deepest condolences to the people and leadership of Russia in connection with the death of 15 servicemen in Syria," the statement obtained by Sputnik read.
The Lebanese authorities condemned the actions of the Israeli air force, which led to the death of Russian troops, directly engaged in "confrontation with terrorism," according to the statement.
The Russian Hmeimim airbase had lost contact with the crew of the Russian Il-20 military aircraft late on Monday during the attack of four Israeli F-16 aircraft on Syrian targets in the province of Latakia. The Russian Defense Ministry said on Tuesday that the Israeli military deliberately created a dangerous situation by using the Russian aircraft as a shield against Syrian air defense systems.
