Afghan Lawmaker Hopes New Government to Establish Strong Ties With Russia

Shabaz Naseri, the chairman of defense and security commission of the Afghan National Assembly, expressed hope in an interview with Sputnik that the new Afghan government would establish strong ties with Russia and work to restore peace in the country.

KABUL (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 19th September, 2018) Shabaz Naseri, the chairman of defense and security commission of the Afghan National Assembly, expressed hope in an interview with Sputnik that the new Afghan government would establish strong ties with Russia and work to restore peace in the country.

"I hope that the next government of Afghanistan will be able to establish very strong ties with Russia and will work to stop the bloodshed," Naseri said.

Parliamentary elections in Afghanistan are scheduled for October 20. The vote will be held after a two-year delay, which was connected with the unstable situation in the country. The last time legislative elections were held was in 2010.

"The Afghan and Russian people have common features. Maybe not this government, but the next one will establish very good ties with Russia and will ask Russia to help finish the war," the lawmaker added.

Naseri noted that the resolution of the Afghan conflict would be beneficial to all countries of the region, including Russia.

Afghanistan has long been suffering from an unstable political, social and security situation due to simmering Taliban insurgency. The violence is exacerbated by the activities of various terrorist groups, including the Islamic State (IS, banned in Russia).
