The death toll from the Mangkhut typhoon in the Philippines climbed from 74 to 81, local media reported on Wednesday, citing the Philippine National Police.

A total of 71 people have suffered injuries as a result of the typhoon, while 70 people are missing, the Rappler news website said.

Most of the fatal casualties have been registered in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), located on the island of Luzon, as the typhoon has claimed 66 lives there. A total of 66 out of the 70 missing people are also from the car.

According to the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, over one million locals have been affected by the Mangkhut, with scores of houses destroyed or damaged, and harm done to farms. The authorities have responded by sheltering people in evacuation centers and providing them social and health services.

Super Typhoon Mangkhut reached the northeast coast of the Philippines on September 14 and then moved on to southern China.
