Justice Dept. Orders 2 Chinese State-Run Media Outlets To Register Under FARA - Reports

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 19th September, 2018) The Department of Justice has ordered two Chinese state-run media outlets in the United States to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), US media reported on Tuesday.

Justice Department officials ordered China's Xinhua News Agency and China Global Television Network (CGTN) to register under FARA, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

The two companies currently have congressional press credentials, which other media outlets have lost due to their FARA registration.

Under the FARA legislation, the entities in question must provide details about their operations to the Justice Department.

The Justice Department forced Russia's RT America and Sputnik radio's partner Reston Translator to register under FARA in November. In February, the department also ordered RIA Global, which produces content for the Sputnik news agency, to register as a foreign agent.

In response to Washington's measures against Russian media outlets, Moscow introduced a law allowing the Russian Justice Ministry to recognize foreign media outlets as "foreign agents."
