The Trump administration's decision to decrease the number of admitted refugees in the United States for fiscal year 2019 to 30,000 undermines the economic viability of New York State, Executive Director at the New York Immigration Coalition Steven Choi told Sputnik on Tuesday.

NEW YORK (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 18th September, 2018) The Trump administration's decision to decrease the number of admitted refugees in the United States for fiscal year 2019 to 30,000 undermines the economic viability of New York State, Executive Director at the New York Immigration Coalition Steven Choi told Sputnik on Tuesday.

"[The new cap] is a major threat to the economic viability of New York, as refugees have stabilized neighborhoods, contributed greatly and started businesses from Brentwood to Buffalo," Choi said.

Communities all across New York State "will suffer from this needless, self-inflicted wound," Choi said.

On Monday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the United States will set the refugee quota for fiscal year 2019 at 30,000 admissions, marking a drop from 45,000 people admitted in fiscal year 2018.
