Idlib Accord Should Help Facilitate Political Process in Syria - German Foreign Minister

The agreements recently reached by the Russian and Turkish leaders in Sochi should be used as an opportunity to promote the political process in Syria, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said Tuesday.

BERLIN (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 18th September, 2018) The agreements recently reached by the Russian and Turkish leaders in Sochi should be used as an opportunity to promote the political process in Syria, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said Tuesday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday agreed to set up a demilitarized zone in the Syrian province of Idlib by October 15. Additionally, the two countries' defense ministers signed a memorandum on the stabilization of the situation in the Idlib de-escalation zone.

"Humanitarian access should be ensured, and we should use this chance to move the political process forward," Maas said, as quoted in the ministry's press release.

The minister added that he would welcome any steps aimed at preventing a humanitarian catastrophe.

"In the last few years, we have been watching the agreements that were made but not adhered to," the minister said.

Maas added that Berlin would continue actively participating in talks on the situation in Syria's Idlib.

The minister highlighted that Berlin was glad for the mutual understanding between Russian and Turkey, and stressed that Germany had held talks with Turkey and Russia in the last few weeks.
