EU Capacity-Building Mission in Niger Extended Until September 2020 - Council of EU

The Council of the European Union said in a press release on Tuesday that it had extended the EU capacity-building mission in Niger (EUCAP Sahel Niger) until September 30, 2020.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 18th September, 2018) The Council of the European Union said in a press release on Tuesday that it had extended the EU capacity-building mission in Niger (EUCAP Sahel Niger) until September 30, 2020.

The mission, led by Frank Van der Mueren and headquartered in the Nigerian capital of Niamey, was launched in 2012 due to European Union's concerns over terrorism and organized crime in the region.

"On 18 September 2018, the Council extended the mandate of EUCAP Sahel Niger until 30 September 2020 and agreed on a budget of 63.4 million [$74.06 million] for the period 1 October 2018 to 30 September 2020," the press release read.

Over the past two years, EUCAP Sahel Niger has also assisted the country's authorities and security forces in addressing the problem of irregular migration.

The mission's budget amounted to 31 million Euros for the period between July 16, 2017 and July 15, 2018.
