Haley Accuses Russia of Blocking US Action on UN Controls of N.Korea's Chemical Arms Flows

Russia is responsible for blocking the United States' action on strengthening UN controls of North Korea's chemical and biological weapons technology flows after the murder of Kim Jong Nam, the half-brother of the country's leader Kim Jong Un, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said on Monday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 17th September, 2018) Russia is responsible for blocking the United States' action on strengthening UN controls of North Korea's chemical and biological weapons technology flows after the murder of Kim Jong Nam, the half-brother of the country's leader Kim Jong Un, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said on Monday.

"When North Korea assassinated Kim Jong Nam with VX, a deadly nerve agent, the United States moved to strengthen UN controls of the flow of chemical and biological weapons technology of North Korea," Haley told the UN Security Council. "Russia... turned around and again blocked the sanctions committee from updating its 12-year-old sanctions list."

Halley said the sanctions list was crucial to preventing the flow of dangerous weapons of mass destruction and similar materials to North Korea.

On February 13, 2017, Kim Jong Nam was killed at the airport in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he resided with his family in exile.

Malaysian investigators have said they suspect Kim was killed with the VX nerve agent. The substance is listed as a chemical weapon and classified by the United Nations as a weapon of mass destruction.

New US sanctions against North Korea were adopted under the US Biological Weapons Control and Warfare Elimination Act of 1991.
