WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 14th September, 2018) The UN and humanitarian partner agencies are providing aid to two North Korean provinces affected by flooding that has displaced more than 10,000 people and destroyed thousands of homes, UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said in a press briefing on Friday.

"On September 12, the DPRK [North Korean] government requested international assistance," Haq told reporters. "UN humanitarian agencies and their partners are responding to the immediate needs of the flood affected people and are planning to expand their support."

Following heavy rains at the end of August, the North and South Hwanghae provinces experienced flooding that killed dozens of people and uprooted more than 10,000 residents, Haq explained.

Red Cross volunteers reported 76 deaths and more than 75 missing in the two provinces, which lie south of the North Korean capital of Pyongyang.
