Beijing Protests US Restrictions on Chinese Firm Over Alleged Breach of N. Korea Sanctions

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Friday that it had lodged a protest in the light of the US sanctions imposed on a Chinese company over its alleged violation of UN sanctions against North Korea.

BEIJING (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 14th September, 2018) The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Friday that it had lodged a protest in the light of the US sanctions imposed on a Chinese company over its alleged violation of UN sanctions against North Korea.

On Thursday, the US Treasury Department announced that it had added a Russian and a Chinese company, Volasys Silver Star and Yanbian Silverstar Network Technology Co. Ltd respectively, to the list of sanctioned entities for their alleged support for North Korea's nuclear and missile programs. The sanctions also target the Chinese company's CEO, North Korean national Jong Song Hwa.

"China has always fully complied with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions. Meanwhile, we oppose unilateral sanctions and exterritorial jurisdiction exercised toward Chinese companies and individuals ... China has made a firm diplomatic representation to the US side and urges the United States to stop these mistaken actions," the ministry's spokesman, Geng Shuang, said.

The United Nations has introduced multiple sanctions against North Korea in response to its repeated missile launches and nuclear tests. The organization, in particular, has restricted oil exports to Pyongyang, banned imports of textile products from North Korea as well as the country's access to gas liquids.

Washington's new punitive measures on entities doing business with North Korea are part of President Donald Trump's maximum pressure campaign on Pyongyang, pursued despite the current de-escalation of tensions on the peninsula sparked by the country's commitment to denuclearize.
